Parashat Yitro
“Jethro”
Yitro, Moshe’s father-in-law, hears about the miracle of the exodus and takes his son-in-law to his family in the desert. There he sees Moshe passing judgment on the lives of all the people of Israel. He tells him to instruct captains of 10, 50, 100, and 1,000 for this task, leaving to Moshe only the most important matters. God announces that in three days he will appear on the top of Mount Sinai and that the people will hear him amid smoke, fire and the sound of the shofar. He makes an announcement, the Decalogue (also known as the “Ten Commandments”) in a collective epiphany. Moshe tells the people that God appeared to him so that they would never stray from his path.

Ex. 18:1-20:23
So Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after she had been sent home,
Moses replied to his father-in-law, “It is because the people come to me to inquire of God.
But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing you are doing is not right;
Moses heeded his father-in-law and did just as he had said.
וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־חֹתְנ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ ל֖וֹ אֶל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃ {פ}
Then Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way to his own land.
Exodus 19
‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me.
The blare of the horn grew louder and louder. As Moses spoke, God answered him in thunder.
The priests also, who come near יהוה, must stay pure, lest יהוה break out against them.”
וַיֵּ֥רֶד מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ {ס}
And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
Exodus 20
וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֛ת כׇּל־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹֽר׃ {ס}
God spoke all these words, saying:
I יהוה am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage:
You shall have no other gods besides Me.
וְעֹ֥֤שֶׂה חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ לַאֲלָפִ֑֔ים לְאֹהֲבַ֖י וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֺתָֽי׃ {ס}
but showing kindness to the thousandth generation of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
“You speak to us,” they said to Moses, “and we will obey; but let not God speak to us, lest we die.”
וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הָעָ֖ם מֵרָחֹ֑ק וּמֹשֶׁה֙ נִגַּ֣שׁ אֶל־הָֽעֲרָפֶ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֖ם הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ {ס}
So the people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.
וְלֹֽא־תַעֲלֶ֥ה בְמַעֲלֹ֖ת עַֽל־מִזְבְּחִ֑י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־תִגָּלֶ֥ה עֶרְוָתְךָ֖ עָלָֽיו׃ {פ}
Do not ascend My altar by steps, that your nakedness may not be exposed upon it.
